“THE AREA 51” LAMPSHADE / PENDANT LIGHT FRAME

Unfettered Co specializes in creative, custom fabricated metal solutions to meet fiber art/craft/design needs. Our collection of pendant light frames is designed, plasma cut, welded, and powder coated on Vancouver Island (Canada).

We offer a playful range of powder coating colours to suit very different style voices (and because life in colour is more wonderful!) With the option to choose any powder coating colour you like, you have control over the finished aesthetic of your lampshade and can decide whether its frame will contrast your fibres or blend seamlessly with them. The frame pictured in this listing is flat black, and the finished yarn-wrapped light is powder coated in white.

The Area 51 Frame can serve as a pendant light or desktop lamp, and we’ve designed some attachments to support this two-in-one function (read below for further details).

MATERIALS
Our frames are made of sturdy industrial grade steel that has been polished and powder coated for rust prevention (and aesthetic freedom). The Area 51 lampshade frame is made from a combination of 1/8th and 3/16ths of an inch round steel.

INSTALLATION
Our light frames do not come accompanied with electrical light fixtures, cording, or light bulbs. But these can easily be found online or in any local hardware store.

SAFETY FIRST
Please be advised that LED lightbulbs are essential for lighting a fibre-wrapped pendant light or desk lamp. Because LED lightbulbs use less electricity and produce less heat, they are a crucial precautionary measure to take when installing your lamp.

1) Our collection of “So Fine You’re Mine Merino Yarn” (pictured in listing) makes a refined, tightly woven surface for your light. it illuminates smoothly and takes on the colours you’ve chosen for a stained glass visual effect.

2) Our collection of “Hollow Braided Recycled Cotton Cord” makes a terrific vegan, plant-based, and sustainable choice for a wrapped lampshade. The hollow nature of the cotton yields a yarn that is easily compressed so that it can be tightly woven to create a smooth, finessed surface against your lampshade frame.

3) We have designed a collection of plasma cut metal shuttles to accompany our lampshade frames. While it’s not necessary to be able to wrap your fiber around a shuttle, it certainly does make life MUCH EASIER to not have to fiddle with lengthy tangled yarn as you create.

RECOMMENDED ATTACHMENTS
We love the versatility of this frame in that it can be hung from a ceiling/wall OR stood on a desk/shelf. This two-in-one design feature was one of our motivating factors in designing this product.

1) For those who wish to hang their pendant lights from a wall attachment, we’ve created a specialized easy-to-install hook meant to accompany your pendant light. With the help of two screws (not included), a stud finder (not included), and a simple screwdriver (not included) you’ll be able to install a powder coated metal arm anywhere on your wall that you wish for your light to hang.

2) For those who wish to stand their lampshade on a desk, table, or shelf, we’ve designed an innovative metal dock that allows clearance for your electrical wire and gives your light a little bit of lift so that your wrapped fibers won’t fray or get damaged.
